Deep Roots - Sound Judgement

Kenneth J. Powell, Jr. for Philadelphia

Municipal Court Judge

I am the son of a Philadelphia police officer & stay-at-home mother and one of seven children. Born and raised in the Grays Ferry section of South Philadelphia, I proudly attended St Gabriel’s School, Bishop Neumann High School, LaSalle College and Temple University School of Law. Between 1973 and 2000, I also taught Sociology & Law courses at LaSalle, St. Joe’s, Holy Family and Philadelphia Community College. I began my civil service career as a Philadelphia probation officer in 1970 while attending Law School at night. I am as PHILADELPHIAN as it gets.

Since earning my law degree, I have practiced law in the Philadelphia legal community for the past 30 years. I have tried thousands of cases to verdict in a variety of jurisdictions in Pennsylvania and throughout the U.S. Experience is ample on both sides of the courtroom: in criminal matters as a prosecutor and as a criminal defense attorney. In civil cases, I’ve served as both a plaintiff’s and defense attorney. Through the years, i’ve tried cases in Municipal Court, the Court of Common Pleas, Juvenile Court, Orphan’s Court, Family Court, Landlord-Tenant Court, Tax Court, Traffic Court, as well as the Federal Courts and Appellate Courts - handling matters ranging from simple probate disputes all the way to high-profile criminal and civil cases. Please know that I understand the process and functions of our judicial system as well as anyone that has run in some time.

I have been voted by my legal peers to AV status, the highest level of professional excellence awarded by Martinndale Hubbell. In addition to my current employment at a litigation firm, I continue to give back to the community through my pro bono work. I have also coached a successful high school mock trial team in a Philadelphia school. When not practicing law, I enjoy a good book and I love my EAGLES, PHILLIES and Big 5 basketball. I am also the sitting Vice President at Philadelphia’s venerable Orpheus Club. Finally, I am a member of Landmarks, Inc., a group dedicated to the preservation of historical sights in Philadelphia.

I have spent my life in Philadelphia and my entire professional life has been spent in a courtroom. It has been a life-long dream to serve as a jurist and I am certain that I can serve my beloved Philadelphia and it’s citizens as an arbiter of justice with the integrity, diligence and honor that you deserve! You need a jurist who draws from broad-based experience and legal knowledge when deciding matters which affect your everyday lives.
